Who we are

Freedom, tolerance, solidarity, respect, opportunity for all; these are the values of the Labour Party. We want to increase the chance of a better life for everyone, and especially for those who have fewer opportunities. We stand for the many, not the privileged few.

In Southwell Division we have nearly 160 members, covering a wide age range, with a significant number of young members. The division covers Southwell town and Halam, Kirklington, Halloughton, Thurgarton, Hockerton and Muskham.

Since May 2023 two of our members, Jamie Bostock and Gina Adams, have become Town Councillors, the first time for some time that there has been a Labour presence on the Town Council. District Councillor Matt Spoors is also a member our branch.

What we do

We meet on the third Monday of every month from 7.30-9pm. We hold our meetings in the entrance hall of Southwell Methodist Church (Westgate, Southwell, NG25 0JH – behind the Saracen’s Head Hotel). We are a very friendly branch and welcome all members warmly. We want our meetings to be as welcoming to someone who has never been to a political meeting as they are to a Labour old hand.

The majority of the meeting is given over to political discussion. Recent topics for debate have included local disability discrimination, policy relating to asylum seekers, and concerns about local transport and access. We also hold social events – quizzes, a pancake party, a picnic and pub nights.

We want Southwell to know that Labour is active in the community. We hold market stalls in the town, to canvas members of the public about what they think are the important issues for them locally and nationally. Members of the party have also been very active in supporting campaigning not only in Southwell, but in Hucknall, Newark, Gedling and other parts of the county. We send out occasional newsletters to members and we want to start leafleting the whole town in the run up to the General Election.

Our goal

Besides making a useful long term local contribution to improving people’s lives in Southwell we want to see a Labour government returned as soon as possible, and in that General Election to play our part in getting a Labour MP returned for Newark – when the General Election comes, we will be working all out for that goal.

Please come and help

We really need every member who can, to come and offer their skills and energy as we all work together to build Labour support in the CLP. We need help with:

  • fundraising
  • leafleting
  • canvassing
  • phone bank
  • and in social ways too

If you want to support the branch financially, please be in touch with the Treasurer. We run the 200 Club, a monthly draw, where you can buy a number for £1 a month. There are lots of numbers free, and there is a prize of £35 each month.

So please do be in touch with us and come and join the struggle. After fourteen years of Tory mismanagement there is so much for our party to do!
